Costs, the ARB code, the written contract, and a safe way to pay.
To hire an influencer in South Africa, shortlist creators whose recent posts reach your buyers, agree the price and ad rights in writing, sign a written contract, make sure the post carries #AD or #Sponsored, and pay in stages.
The advertising rule in South Africa
The Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) Social Media Code, Appendix K, names #AD, #Advertisement, and #Sponsored as recognised identifiers. Where paid content could look like the influencer's unsolicited opinion, it must be clearly identified with one of them. Influencers must also disclose goods or services they were given, permanently or on loan, in return for coverage, whether or not that was stated.
The brand is responsible for claims in influencer content, and "it was my opinion" is not a defence. The brand must also tell the influencer about any mandatory declarations that apply to its industry.
Marketers must have a written contract with any paid influencer. It must cover the brief, the payment and its conditions, the duty to publish only your own content or credit the creator, and the mandatory disclosures. A law-firm summary of a 2026 ARB ruling reports that posting the same paid content on another account does not remove the duty to disclose.
This is not legal advice. Check the current rules, and agree in your contract who adds the label and where.
What it costs
We do not have a South Africa-specific rate table. As a guide, the median agreed fee for one collaboration in Kolect's 2026 campaigns (global, in US dollars) was $250 for creators under 10K followers, $400 for 10K to 100K, and $600 for 100K to 500K. Convert to rand at the day's rate and treat the number as a starting point for a negotiation.

Questions
How much does it cost to hire an influencer in South Africa?
We do not publish a South Africa-specific figure. Global medians from Kolect's 2026 campaigns were $250, $400, and $600 for creators under 10K, 10K to 100K, and 100K to 500K followers, so convert to rand. Use the rate calculator for a specific creator.
Do influencer posts need a label in South Africa?
Yes. The ARB Social Media Code names #AD, #Advertisement, and #Sponsored as recognised identifiers, and requires influencers to disclose goods or services received in return for coverage. This is not legal advice.
Does a South African influencer deal need a written contract?
Yes. The ARB code says marketers must have a written contract with any paid influencer, covering the brief, payment, content credit, and mandatory disclosures.
How do I pay a creator safely?
Put the scope, dates, usage, and price in a contract, and pay in stages. On Antellio the brand funds escrow and the money is released after you approve the work.
